Portobello Beach
A real seaside town inside the city
In brief
Three kilometres of sand and a Victorian promenade, twenty-five minutes by bus from the centre. This is Edinburgh's only real beach — not a park but a working seaside town, with cafes and chip kiosks along the front. There's a wood-fired sauna on the sand, used by sea swimmers.
Compiled from public sources — not my own note.
Good to know
- The sauna needs booking.
- The North Sea is cold all year.
- The historic Turkish baths inside the Victorian swim centre may be closed for maintenance — worth checking first.
